What Matters in Successful Investing

What Matters in Successful Investing

January 14, 2025

In this month’s Beacon Blog, we look at what REALLY matters in investing successfully… and what may not matter as much as you would think!

What Matters in Successful Investing:

  • Diversification: Spreading investments across various asset classes and sectors to potentially reduce risk and because no one knows what this year’s best performing asset class will be (see chart below courtesy of “A Wealth of Common Sense”)

  • Long-term Perspective: Staying invested over the long term to ride out market volatility and benefit from compound growth, as there really is no such thing as a “normal year” in the stock market (see chart below courtesy of Charlie Bilello)

  • Risk Management: Assessing and managing the level of risk in your portfolio according to your financial goals and risk tolerance.

  • Reinvestment: Reinvesting dividends and interest to compound returns over time, if you are able.

What Might Not Matter as Much:

  • Market Timing: Attempting to predict market highs and lows often leads to missed opportunities and increased transaction costs.  (See the chart below courtesy of Ritholtz Wealth Management to show that you can make money even if investing at the “worst times

  • Short-term Market Fluctuations: Reacting to daily market movements can lead to impulsive decisions that may not align with long-term goals.

  • Media Hype: Making investment decisions based on sensational news stories or market hype can lead to poor outcomes.

  • Past Performance: Relying solely on past performance as an indicator of future results can be misleading, as market conditions change.

  • Stock Tips and Rumors: Acting on unverified tips or rumors can result in uninformed and risky investment choices.

By focusing on what truly matters and being cautious about what might not, investors can make more informed and strategic decisions in the stock and bond markets.
